Astana and Team Sky were amongst those in the peloton putting the hammer down and with 27kms to go, the break was mopped up.

That meant a double ascent of the Superga climb and Team Sky were on the front followed by Tinkoff Saxo in a lead group of about thirty riders.

The lead group caught them and with 2.6kms to go, Astana's Diego Rosa stormed away. Wout Poels on his birthday, led up the chasing group but Rosa was pedalling for all he was worth.

Rafal Majka took over the persuit of Rosa, who had an eighteen seconds gap as he went under the flam rouge.

It was now out of Rosa and Majka as to who would win and Rosa made sure that he took the win when he ploughed on to finish in a time of 4.27.51.

Majka finished second sixteen seconds down and was followed by Aru,  Pinot and Poels.
