British Road Racing Champion Geraint Thomas was just beaten into second by Nick Nuyens in the Dwars door Vlaanderen.this afternoon in a sunny Belgium.
This 201km race which featured twelve climbs and three cobbled sections attracted a good field including British Champion Geraint Thomas, Russell Downing plus the likes of Fabian Cancellera, Tyler Farrar (pictured below), Tom Boonen, Andre Greipel, Sylvain Chavanel and Heinrich Haussler.
Frederic Amorison (Landbouwkrediet), Rob Goris (Veranda's Willems-Accent), Tom Veelers (Skil-Shimano) and Dries Hollanders (AN Post-Sean Kelly) went clear and built up a five and a half minute lead by the time they reached the Katterberg climb.
Sheffield's Adam Blythe who rides for Omega Pharma Lotto, did his work at the front to try and reduce the lead before Commeyne ended up in a ditch after going very wide.
Another Brit, Cardiff's Geraint Thomas hit the front but was quickly dropped as Tom Boonen made a number of attacks to try and get the win, he had been well backed for.
More attacks came from Leopard Trek, as Hollanders drop off the back of the leading quartet, before Thomas did the same.
With 37kms to go, Amorison dropped Goris and Veelers and went away on his own, with a two minute lead. Klemme crashed whilst Saxo Bank mounted an attack which saw a group of twenty riders including Boonen, Thomas and Cancellera trying to chase down Frederic Amorison.
With the race moving onto flat concrete road, Geraint Thomas (pictured below) made his move along with Nick Nuyens of Saxo Bank. They caught up with Amorison.
The trio were still there with 3kms to go whilst the peleton were 12 seconds back,
Nick Nuyens went closely followed by Thomas and the Saxo Bank rider had enought left in his tank to get over the line in first place ahead of Team Sky rider Thomas and Farrar.
