Team Sky's Ben Swift won the opening stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali race.
The opening stage of this five day race in the Emila-Romagna region of Italy started with an early 100km stage race which started and finished in Gatteo on a day of two stages with a team time trial this afternoon.
The first attack came after 37 kilometres when Quintero, Van Hecke, Miyazawa, Antonini, Luksevics, Tedeschi and Kiserlovski formed a group at the front.
This group of seven riders were 2.35 ahead after 45kms but Team Sky started to reel them back in and the break was caught inside the final twenty kilometres leaving a big group of fifty riders in a lead group with a 1.20 lead on the peloton.
With three kilometres to go, this group were still 22 seconds ahead and this allowed Team Sky's Ben Swift, who finished third in Milan-San Remo on Sunday, to jump clear and take the win, ahead of Mori, Caruso, Sprengers, Cecchin, Pasqualon, Barbin, Kennaugh, Taborre and Busato.
