Tony Martin of Omega Pharma Quick Step has won the Tour De Suisse opening stage.
This year's race attracted a strong field including Sir Bradley Wiggins and British Champion Mark Cavendish and started with a 9.4km time trial around Bellinzona.
Wiggins who had been one of the favourites for the stage which was lumpy with one climb finished in 14.20 but he was well down on down on Garmin Sharp's Rohan Dennis' time of 14.01.
Enter World Time TrIal Champion Tony Martin and the Omega Pharma Quick Step rider was the quickest at the first intermediate sprint and got the hammer down to take over the lead with a time of 13.48.
Local hero Fabian Cancellera was another tipped to do well but the Trek Factory rider could only come home sixteen seconds down on the time of the German.
Tom Dumoulin went second after completing the course in 13.54 but no-one could get near Martin's time and the German leads the race going into stage two.
