Valverde Wins Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana

Movistar's Alejandro Valverde won the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana.

The third of the four race of the Challenge Mallorca 2015 series saw a 165.7km stage from Validemossa to Deia with seven climbs.

There was a split in the peloton early and a group of 26 riders in Navardauskas, Bagot, Hardy, Asselman, Van Empel, Mas, Terpstra, Parra, Thurau, Paterski, Owsian, Van Zyl, Kudus, Valverde, Ventoso, Herrada, Moreno, Pate, Coppe, Chevrier, Wyss, Vervaeke, Bart De Clercq, Wegmann, Del Pino, Bizkarra and Jurado.got away on the first climb and had a 1.34 lead approaching the second.

Team Sky worked to bring them back and with sixty kilometres to go, only Vervaeke and Paterski were left up front with a lead of 45 seconds.

Gerdeman, who had caught up to the chasers took over on the front but on the Coll de Sa Batalla,: Valverde and Kudus led with forty kilometres remaining.

Ten kilometres later and away went Valverde, taking a thirty second lead over Kudus and 2.20 over the peloton.

Valverde of Movistar was away as Tim Wellens and Leopald Koenig battled it out for second place and he took the race in 4.34.29, some 1.23 ahead of Wellens of Lotto Soudel, 1,33 ahead of Koenig of Team Sky, 2.10 ahead of team mate JJ Rojas and Marc De Maar of Team Roompot.

Valverde said to his team's website: "It was a triumph with hard work  on my part and that of my team. "I am very happy because this victory supports the good feelings that I had today and the good work the team one over the winter.

"We have a good team we all get along very well, and I think that's very important. I dedicate it to them."
