Tejay van Garderen of BMC moved closer to retaining his US Pro Tour Challenge title with victory in the Time Trial.
The sixth stage of this American race was a 16.1km individual time trial from Vail to Vail Pass.
Czech Republic rider Leonard Koenig of Team Net App Endura set the early time to beat with a finish of 27.40 and he was ahead of Carlson of Jelly Belly by two seconds.
That was until Ben Day finished in 27.37 and then Tinkoff Saxo's Michael Rogers ignored the wet roads to finish in 26.06.46.
Ben Hermans of BMC went second, finishing fifteen seconds back on Rogers time.
As the rain really came down, Tom Danielson of Garmin Sharp finished in 25.19.26.
But race leader Tejay van Garderen absolutely flew round the course to finish in 24.26.50 and ensured that he won not only the stage but leads the US Pro Tour Challenge going into the final stage from Boulder to Denver with a lead over Tom Danielson by 1.31 and 1.45 over Sergei Tvetcov
