Rabbobank's Peter Weening won the fifth stage of the Giro D'italia this afternoon.
It was back to racing on the fifth stage which was from Piombino to Orvieto, following the tragic death of Wouter Weylandt.
The late Belgian's Leopard Trek team long with Tyler Farrar too upset to continue, the race set off on its fifth stage on a sunny.
With 80km to go, race leader David Millar was knocked off his bike by Angel Vicisio. Millar got up and began the chase back to the peleton who were trying to bring back BMC's Swiss rider Martin Kohler.
Barring the odd spill, the riders got over the 19kms of dirt roads but with fourteen kilometres left there was a bad crash involving Rabbobank's Tom Slagter.
Further up the road and with the riders unaware as to what was happening to Slagter who was still on the floor but thankfully was conscious after cutting his head. Kohler was caught with 8.4kms of the 191km stage.
Gadret went off the front and then Rabbobank's Peter Veening did the same followed by a group of sixty riders including David Millar and Team Sky's Peter Kennaugh.
David Millar sadly dropped off the back of that group now led by Sky's Thomas Lovkist with two kilometres to go.
Michele Scarponi and Alberto Contador battled away before Nieve shot away. However, it was Veening who held to win in a time of 4hr 54 mins and 49 seconds with Fabio Duarte second and Serpa Perez in third/
David Millar came in two minutes and 48 seconds back along with Kohler and lost his jersey to Weening who leads HTC's Marco Pinotti by two seconds.
