Warwickshire County Cricket Club improved after a collapse on the second day of their opening County Championship game with Hampshire at Edgbaston.
Warwicks resumed on 14-0 but having got to 39, they lost openers Varun Chopra for 24 and Ian Westwood for 11.
Tomlinson had taken the wicket of Westwood and he soon had Will Porterfield for three after the Irishman gave Smith a catch to see Warwicks on 42-3.
Sam Hain and Laurie Evans added thirty before Evans was trapped lbw by Ervine after making sixteen.
Hain went for 25 as Tim Ambrose came in. The wicketkeeper started to show some good form with the bat, whilst Clarke went for seven, Barker for 31 and Patal for thirty, which took him past the 4,000 runs mark.
Ambrose took Warwicks through the 250 mark and made his century from 141 balls including fifteen fours, before being caught by Jimmy Adams after making 113, to give Tomlinson a third wicket.
Boyd Rankin was caught after making four runs and Warwicks were all out for 280, some thirty nine runs behind.
Hampshire were 38-1 in their second innings
