Congratulations to Pickwick CC Division 2 2nds champions before the start of play
The WCL crown for 2014 has gone to Aston Manor CC who are now 25 points ahead of the filed with 1 match remaining and return to the BDPCL on the first time of asking. Well done to all at Aston Manor CC. Aston Manor has S Findlay to thank with 94 not out in a chase for 166 to win which was accomplished by 2 wickets, giving them their 11th win of the season this time over Handsworth. Meanwhile at Bedworth, Rugby knocked off the 200 scored by Bedworth for 5 down to leave Bedworth with 6 points, and that folks is the 2014 WCL done and dusted.
On Sunday, a thrilling T20 finals day saw the lower league competition go to Walmley by 5 runs as their score of 156 was just good enough to hold off Dunlop (Pak Stars) CC. The main event of the Baqnd A final was equally tense and ebbed and flowed with Four Oaks Saints batting first getting off to a flyer before some good death bowling and a few late wickets left the score at 173 from their 20. The pitch was a good one, a credit to Hampton and Solihull CC who provided their facilities in support of the day, and 173 looked the par score. The Southam innings too started well with the 50 coming up in the 4th over and they remained ahead of the rate for much of their innings, however wickets fell regularly. At the start of the last over they were 8 down still needing 9 to win. The match went to the last ball scores level, they field all up saving but Southam finished in style with a 4 to win on 177 for 8 and are WCL band A T20 champions for 2014. Ian Cherry presented the trophy on behalf of the league, the England T20 match placed on pause on Sky so all could adjourn to the bar and see their 3rd thrilling T20 match of the day conclude.
Division 1 remains close because Ambleside 3rd entertaining top spot Marston Green kept themselves in the hunt getting the 210 to win in 45 overs for just 4 wickets. Solihull Municipal obtained a winning draw after scoring 306 for 3 in 49 overs, but, Pak Shaheen hung on 9 down. Alex Roslyn 7 for 38 and 121 not out, a rare feat of making both the batting and bowling highlights in the same week ! So Solihull have a 7 point lead over Marston Green into the last week with Ambleside 9 further back.
Division 2 is a straight race for the title between Knowle Village and Lyndworth, in a telling result today, Knowle Village retained the top spot by 2 points by achieving a winning draw against 3rd placed Weoley Hill, whilst Lyndworth ran out winners at Old Eds. Both face bottom half clubs at home next week.
Division3 remains very close, Leamington Khalsa failed to win but their winning draw kept them in the race just, when bottom beat top at Oakfiled, Oakfileds 256 for 6 being far too many for their visitors. 20 points separate Hunningham and Leamington Khalsa and one of these clubs will be champions. 5 clubs could still end up second Bournville 5th 19 points behind Leamington Khalsa. Next week’s key fixture in this division is at Sheldon Marlborough, 3rd, who are visited by Leamington Khalsa 2nd, both clubs having their fate in their own hands with 9 points separating them, and of course Leamington with a 24 point win being able to catch Hunningham if they slip up.
Please remain aware of the situation in division 3 seconds where earlier this season a match was called off by a third party, the committee gave Leamington Khalsa the right to replay that match 20th September and although it shows as “played” in the WCL tables it is not and will still have bearing on the tables.
