Sir Bradley Wiggins won the Amgem Tour Of Californa Time Trial.
The time trial was over a 20.1km course around Lake Folsom and the town centre.
Robbie Squire was first down the ramp on a very hot day and finished up with a time of 26:20, which lasted until Jose Mendes of Team NetApp-Endura came home in 25:49 and then Jens Mouris of Orica GreenEdge set a new fastest time of 24:55.
Australian Jack Bobridge of Belkin Pro Cycling Team and Rohan Dennis of Garmin Sharp went quicker with Dennis, who crashed in the opening stage, finishing in 24:02.
Sir Bradley Wiggins, favourite for this stage and with designs on an overall victory, went off at 14.42 local time and soon caught Sabbotini of Cannondale, who was a minute ahead of him and was fastest at the intermediate check point by nineteen seconds.
Wiggins passed fellow Brit Adam Yates who won the Tour Of Turkey and finished in a time of 23.18 at an average speed of 32 miles per hour.
Taylor Phinney of BMC had the backing of much of the crowd as he went off whilst further up the road, Laurens Ten Dam crashed after finishing the stage after being taken down by another rider.
There was a massive cheer when race leader Mark Cavendish, in a blue and yellow skinsuit, went down the ramp at 15.22 local time.
Phinney was thirty two seconds down on Wiggins at the time check and finished fifty two seconds down.
Peter Sagan came in at 24.54 and Cavendish and John Degenkolb were both down on Wiggins time at the first check point.
Cavendish put everything he had and finished in 25.21 for a placing of 27th but Wiggins won the stage and went into the leader's yellow jersey with a lead of 44 seconds over Rohan Dennis for stage three which is 177kms long from San Jose to Mt Diablo State Park.
Adam Yates was 40th with Luke Rowe 97th
