Trek Segafredo's Bauke Mollema has won the Clasica San Sebastian.
The biggest one day race in Spain over 200kms attracted a big field including 2015 race winner dam Yates (Orica) along with Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Greg Van Avermaet and Richie Porte (BMC), Dan Martin (Etixx), Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) and Bauke Mollema (Trek).
An early break saw Moreno Moser (Cannondale-Drapac), Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre-Merida), Pirmin Lang (IAM Cycling), Jaques Janse Van Rensburg (Dimension Data), Jamie Roson (Cajal Rural) and Loic Chetout (Cofidis) able to get 5.20 ahead.
That was down to 3.20 as they went over the Alto de Jaizkibel and a minute by the time, they took on the Arkale with 80kms left thanks to good work on the front from the Movistar team.
As they approached the Jaizkibel for the second and final time, only Moser, Niemiec, Roson & Van Rensburg were left on the front and when they got onto the climb the peloton caught them up.
Cannondale and Movistar took turns on the front but going into the final twenty kilometres, Igor Anton (Dimension Data) briefly led before being joined by those left in the race.
Past the beaches of San Sebastian and then onto the final climb and Uran attacked followed by Adam Yates, fresh from his fourth place in the Tour De France.
Yates led but Rodriquez caught and passed him as did Bauke Mollema of Trek Segafredo who had been bringing up a group of chasers.
With eight kilometres to go, Mollema made his move and away he went taking a thirteen second lead.
Although he was chased down, Bauke Mollema refused to give up and took the victory in 5.31.00, some five seconds ahead of Tony Gallopin.of Lotto Soudal, followed by Alejandro Valverde, Joaquin Rodriguez, Greg Van Avermaet, Gianluca Brambilla, Simon Yates, Tom Jelte Slagter, Nicolas Roche and Dries Devenyns.
Speaking about his victory, Mollema said: "I’m really happy to have this win. I felt good all day. In the last years, I was always in the top 10 here. I’ve recovered well from the Tour de France, so I’m really happy with this win.
"The last days of the Tour de France were really disappointing for me. This is a good way to fight back and I think I showed that I have good form and that I can look forward to the Olympics.
"It’s really nice to win a big classic like this, which is my first WorldTour classic victory. It’s a really nice race and I’ve always wanted to be on the podium at this race and get one of those Basque hats – and now finally I have one."
