Julian Alaphilippe has won the Tour of California.
Julian Alaphillippe of Etixx Quick Step needed only to finish safely on the 136km stage eight around Sacramento to win, having a sixteen second lead over Rohan Dennis.
Seven riders in Jake Kelly (Team WIGGINS), Alan Marangoni (Cannondale Pro Cycling), Chris Jones (UnitedHealthcare), Krists Neilands (Axeon Hagens Berman), Taylor Sheldon (Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis), Robin Carpenter (Holowesko-Citadel Racing) and Emerson Oronte (Rally Cycling) took a two minute lead on a sunny but cool day.
That lead was still at two minutes after seventy kilometres but 1.15 when Chris Jones took the intermediate sprint ahead of Alan Marangoni.
Mark Cavendish, who had a puncture, moved back to the front of the peloton as they headed into the state capital of California - Sacramento.
Over the finish line for the time with 10.4kms to go and the seven out front were only 41 seconds ahead with Peter Sagan's Tinkoff team on the front.

The bell sounded the last lap as the speed picked up with 3kms to go with the seven still ahead by a matter of seconds.
With 1.6kms left, the peloton had engulfed all the escapers and Cavendish and Renshaw were on the train of Kristoff. Peter Sagan went but down the left came Mark Cavendish, a day after his 31st birthday and off the wheel of Peter Sagan, he took the win, his tenth in the Tour of California, ahead of Sagan and Kristoff.
Julian Alaphilippe finished eleventh to take the overall victory.
Kirsten Wild won the final stage of the Women's Tour Of California but Megan Guarnier took the overall victory.
