American Evelyn Stevens has broken the Women's World Hour Record.

The record stood at 46.882km which was set in January by Bridie O'Donnell. However, at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center Velodrome, Stevens rode a steady pace of 48kmh and was able to set a new distance of 47.980 kilometres.

"In the beginning I really wanted to stay calm," Stevens is quoted by cyclingnews.com as saying. "More than anything it was an opportunity to be great. As I said earlier, it's not common to get a chance to set a world record. I can't believe this many people came to watch me. Knowing that made me go a little bit harder. The amount of support was really flattering.

"It couldn't have been a more perfect day. I was able to really hit my split times. I wanted to bring it down faster at the end but you don't know your limit until you're out there."
