Warwickshire County Cricket Club beat Hampshire this afternoon by eight wickets on the final day of the County Championship game at Edgbaston.
Hants resumed on 104-5 and Neil Carter added two more wickets to take five second innings wickets whilst Chris Woakes took four wickets to give Warwicks a target of 78 to earn only their fourth County Championship win at Edgbaston in the last four years.
Rain was the biggest threat for Warwicks. Thirty eight overs were lost to the rain but Warwicks only needed twelve overs to make 80-2 after Darren Maddy and Neil Carter were out for 24 apiece. Ian Westwood finished 21 not out with Ian Bell 10 not out as Warwicks won by eight wickets.
Speaking after the game to Cricinfo.com, Ashley Giles said: "I was up at 5am peering out of the window and I couldn't sleep afterwards. "I don't mind losing a day, but two days when you're trying to win your first game of the season is a worry. Fortunately the gods were kind.
"We played some average cricket at times but what is most pleasing is the way we showed some old-fashioned Bears resilience. From 98 for seven in the first innings, we were just hoping to get within 100 of them. So to gain a first innings lead was fantastic."
On Sunday, Warwicks face Leicestershire (weather permitting) in a Clydesdale Bank Pro 40 game at Edgbaston. Play is due to start at 1.45pm.
