A strange day in the WCL saw rain overnight becoming heavy in the morning causing many cancelations, but just as all seemed lost the sun broke thru at 12:30 and by late afternoon several matches which survived the rain ended in bright sunshine with close results.

No apologies for starting at the top end of the table this week as at Streetly, there was cricket, starting just over 1 hour late and reduced to 40 overs a side. The visitors Nuneaton, Streetly top of the table knowing a win could put them even further ahead. The result was one of those strange occasions when both teams scored the same runs but because a further 4 overs where lost to rain during the day, Streetly claimed a majority of the points on run rate. Nuneaton batting first made steady progress with Lydon Topp and Ruban Field taking them to 68 before both fell to Andy Lloyd in quick succession. There was then a flurry of wickets and it seemed at 93 for 6 Streetly would claim maximum points, but Dany Topp then joined Russel Rice put on 91 for the seventh wicket before Topp was out off the last ball. 184 for 7 from 40 about the par score. Streetly in response built several pattenerships with Steve Eastham, Andy Lloyd and Shaun Findlay all reaching 30 but not converting to a 50. The loss of a further 4 overs to rain, in the end was crucial and although well ahead of the run rate Russ guy with 28 not out at the end could not guide his team to that additional run for victory and Streetly 184 for 6 settled for a 16 point draw; Nuneaton 9 points for their efforts. Bablake played but came up against the top score of the day 291 for 5 by Bedworth, and hanging on at 162 for 9 only claimed a 6 point draw. Olton were the only winners in the division, so advantage Streetly and a 30 point margin tonight. Next week Bablake host Streetly and it is getting to the stage that this could be a decisive match for both clubs, if Bablake win the division is wide open again, if Streetly win the gap could well extend to near 50 points.

Two interesting bowling performances, Mubasharak Afzal’s 9 for 29 for Copsewood West Indian Wanderers is the best in the league this year and of course Copsewood went on to win that match have restricted Wlamley to the lowest score in the WCL this week, and a feat of 5 for 0 by Jake Woodcock for Nuneaton 4th vs Warwcik, remarkable in itself, but also contained a hat trick.

In the division 1 match of the day saw Four Oaks Saints close the gap on their rivals on the day Southam, with a winning draw Nadeem again the Four Oaks Saints star, 41 runs and 4 for 31 as Saints just had the better of the draw in a match reduced to 35 overs a side. Nadeem was 5th out on 112 after which the Four Oaks Saints innings fell away with Thomas Wilkins 4 for 46, pulling them back such that they closed at 155 for 9. Good contributions of 31 and 26 in the top order from Coel Mahoney and Nathan Hooker had Southam off to a solid start, but Nadeem then took over and removed the top 3 and Southam found themselves 86 for 6. Captain, Chris Bramley has been making major contributions for Southam for many years, and helped by Henry Wilkins (20) steadied the ship before being 8th out for 29 at 124. Nine ten and jack then held out for the draw at 144 for 9. That last wicket partnership might at the end of the season be crucial for Southam who escaped without doing major damage to their lead at the top of the division and they will also have celebrated the helping hand from Warwick who beat Waslall WMF on the day. P. Rowe 6-9 in this one the key performance as Walsall slumped to 89 all out chasing 172 for 8.
