Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that managing a lower league club is no different to managing a top flight side.
Mowbray told Keiran Crowley: "Phil is a good football man. He's managed in the Premier League and had some really good periods in his career.
"He took a decision to take a job lower down the leagues, just as I have. It'll be totally different for Phil as it is for me.
"Sometimes, without the budgets to go and change your players around, bring players in or change the environment, it's just as enjoyable as it is at the top end of the game.
"It's just a different challenge and I'm sure Phil will be enjoying the challenge down at Southend just like I am here."
