Blair Adams, on loan at Coventry City from Sunderland until January 5th, has said he is loving his time at the club and would be happy to extend his loan.
Since Adams joined the Sky Blues in November, Coventry have become the in form team in League One, winning 13 points from a possible 15, scoring 18 goals and progressing to the semi-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and the FA Cup.
Adams was a candidate for the man of the match in the 4-1 win at Doncaster last Saturday when he kept Rovers’ winger Kyle Bennett out of the game and was instrumental in both od McGoldrick’s goals as well as an assist that the League One top scorer fired wide.
Under the loan deal, Adams can play in another four league games and he is scheduled to return nto the north east after Coventry’s FA Cup trip to Tottenham on 5th January.
Adams told the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole: “I’m loving my time here. it’s been brilliant to be playing every week and this is a team on the up. I have only played six or seven games but some of them have been fantastic performances when we have produced some great football and created a lot of chances and we want that to continue and climb up the league.
“If the manager wants me to stay then we’ll have a talk and see what happens. I’m really happy with the way things have gone and hopefully he’s happy with how I have been playing so we will have to see how it goes come the New Year.
“I’ve not spoken to Martin O’Neill but I have spoken to the reserve manager and he’s happy with the way it’s going. I’m in my last year at Sunderland and I’ve not had talks with them about extending my contract so, again, we’ll I’ll have to see what happens in the summer, but I want first-team football. I want to be playing in a stadium at three o’clock every week, playing for points that matter and sending the fans home happy.”
The 4-1 thrashing of high flying Doncaster Rovers in their own backyard was praised by City’s manager Mark Robins as the most complete performance by the Sky Blues since he took charge in September.
Adam was brought into the side after another loan signing, Wolves’ Jamie Reckord didn’t quite supply the attacking flair he required.
Adams enthused, “Everything we touched turned to gold and came off. I am just here to do well and I suppose I must be doing something right so I’ll just keep working hard for the manager and the team. I’ll keep getting forward and try to provide the lads with even more crosses and assists as well.”
League One’s leading scorer David McGoldrick was quick to praise the support of his left back that enabled the striker to net his 16th and 17th goals of the season, saying, “Blair has been quality since he’s been in. He gets up and down and he put in a great performance at Doncaster. I said to him before the game that they have got two big centre-halves so it would be useless to just hang the ball up.
“He put in a great cross for my first goal and then played me in again. I should have scored then but I saw the defender coming so I knew I had to take it early and it went wide. This was a great attacking performance, our best so far and we’ve put out a massive statement because we didn’t go for the draw, we wanted a win.”
Adams went on say: “We are showing some great away form and we’re starting to do that at The Ricoh as well and that’s important because you always need to win your home games.”
Mark Robins wouldn’t be drawn on whether the club will negotiate an extension to Adams’ loan deal, but was delighted with his all-round contribution to the game.
Robins said, “He let the own-goal against Walsall affect him and I thought he started slowly against Doncaster, but he came into the game, did well against a tricky winger in Bennett who has been in great form, and looked excellent going forward. It was another big tick against his name.”
