Coventry City MD Chris Anderson has said that a selling club like the Sky Blues can stand to make significant amounts of money if James Maddison turns in to the player he is expected to become.
Anderson refused to give any figures of how much City will actually get from the deal with estimates anywhere now between £4m and £9.5m depending on who you believe.
Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph in a bid to try and head off much of the anger over the decision, especially as many City supporters would have preferred a larger sum of cash up front as more times than not, many of these add-ons fail to materialise into hard currency, Mr Anderson said: “I think it’s important people understand that it’s never just about the cash up front for a player like James who is still developing and who will hopefully follow a trajectory that will be very successful.
“A selling club like us at the moment can stand to make significant amounts of money if James becomes the footballer we think he’s going to become.
"That’s money that doesn’t just come today; it’s significant money that will keep coming and will contribute to the health of the football club over the medium term because these things are structured to run over three, four, five years, by which time I know James will be an established Premier League footballer."
