Popular former Sky Blue forward Andy Morrell is the Coventry City's Former Player Association's ‘special guest’ for Saturday afternoon’s CCFC home League One game at the Ricoh against Barnsley.
Andy has been a ‘special guest’ at a number of previous Sky Blues’ games over past seasons so will be interested to see how Mark Robins’ 2018-19 team do against a team currently third in the League One table.
Last Sunday’s first Sky Blues away win at Oxford United, though not exactly comprehensive, will have heartened the Sky Blues as it lifted us out of the relegation zone into comparative mid table comfort. Can they kick on?
To remind readers, Andy studied Sports Science at Newcastle University and worked in a gym whilst playing as as an amateur/semi professional with the likes of Newcastle Blue Star from 1997 before he really built his soccer reputation in Wales. Sky Blue fans will remember Andy as a hard-working wing forward who was signed by Gary McAllister to the Sky Blues in May 2003 from Wrexham where he had been a goal poaching ace over five seasons (43 goals in 120 appearances).
Andy assisted us during a tricky time in the Championship and in 108 first team appearances (often from the bench) netted a creditable 24 times in his three seasons with us. In August 2006 he moved to Blackpool where he made a great early contribution to their push towards their eventual Premiership status. Andy then moved to Bury in 2008 for a couple of seasons and from August 2010 to February 2014 he assisted Wrexham (from 2011 as player-manager). He took the Dragons to Wembley twice in 2013, winning the F.A.Trophy on the first visit.
After a brief spell as Assistant Manager at Shrewsbury Town, Andy became gaffer of Tamworth in early 2014 (later joined by popular fellow CCFPA member Claus Bech Jorgensen) and took the Conference North side to the playoffs (as well a playing quite a number of games himself). Since February 2018 Andy has been playing with Redditch United (and scored on his début)!
Andy joined CCFPA in early 2011, becoming, in the process the Association’s 180th Full member. He attended Legends Day last year (above left) and also turns out from time to time with our Legends XI in Charity games (below left)
As usual with all our Saturday ‘specials’ Andy will be in the club’s Family Zone mingling with the club’s youngest supporters and their families well before the game starts. He will also be touring the supporters lounges at the Ricoh before kick-off in the company of club host and fellow CCFPA member Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts when he will no doubt talk about his Sky Blue days and prospects for the game. He will be watching the game from the Ricoh Press Box assisting the guys from BBC CWR in their broadcast commentary of the game as it unfolds and, no doubt, CCFPA’s Billy Bell will entice him to meet more fans in Lady Gs down in the G-Casino for some post-match repartee. Why not join Andy and many other CCFPA members at the match on Saturday?
We hope enjoy your day with us and see a Sky Blue win on Saturday Andy!!
