Barnsley FC are hoping that Oliver Norwood will sign for them.
Norwood, who was on loan at Coventry City and is known to be on manager Andy Thorn's wish list, is a free agent after not taking up the offer of a new deal from Manchester United in pursuit of regular football.
"We're optimistic but we need to make sure we strike a financial balance," Barnsley boss Keith Hill told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"He represents good value for money. He can be creative, he can score goals and he can play in a two-man midfield."
