David Bell, who scored the stunning match winning goal at Crystal Palace last Saturday, has admitted that he would like to retain the trophy at the end of the current campaign.
Bell won the club' s Goal of the season last year with a cracking long range volley against Doncaster Rovers.
Both Bell and manager Chris Coleman have agreed that Bell doesn't do tap ins, but Bell is aware that he should be getting into the box and scoring more routine goals rather than the long range spectaculars he has become known for at the club.
Bell told reporters, “I don’t do tap-ins but that is something I need to get into my game, but if I can score goals like that then hopefully I can score a few tap-ins as well."
“I think that’s my third so hopefully I’m heading toward my target. If I can keep playing every game between now and the end of the season, hopefully I can get a few more.”
Bell scored against Bristol earlier this month with another stunning strike, firing into the net with a left foot volley from 25 yards out so has two contenders fo the goal of the season.
Bell said, “It might be in our top five for goal of the season. Besty scored a couple of decent goals but he has left the club so I am not sure whether his count now so hopefully I can retain my title.”
Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman is delighted with Bell's ability, saying: “Belly doesn’t do scruffy goals; he’s got that little bit of quality. He started on the bench because he’d taken a knock but when he went on he provided that little bit of quality you need in the last third."
“When the keeper came out he didn’t ask Belly a question, he gave him the answer but there was still a lot to do and he was ice cold. It was a goal worthy of winning any game.”
Now that bell is back to full fitness, he is keen to start a few games and get among the goals again. He said, “I was disappointed that I didn’t start but delighted with the goal and the three points. The boys have done well during the two games that I missed so I couldn’t have too many complaints to be honest."
“I was itching to get on in what was quite an end to end game with them attacking and then us and I thought there would only be one goal in it. “The gaffer said to me with 20-25 minutes to go to try to create something in the final third and I went on and got the winning goal, so I am very happy about that."
“Neil Warnock’s teams are always hard to beat and with what’s going on off the pitch it can galvanise players, so we are delighted that we went down there off the back of losing to Newcastle and got a result.”
David Bell also acknowledged the large part the defence have played in the resurgence of form and the subsequent rise up the league table saying, “Our back four, or five if you include Westy, for the last 12, 13 or 14 games have been superb to be honest and hopefully we can continue keeping clean sheets like that because with players like Clinton Morrison and the other strikers and attacking mid fielders in the side, I think we have always got the chance of scoring goals.”
“We were on a good run before the Newcastle result so hopefully we can go on another one now. Scunthorpe at home is a difficult game for us this week but we have got good form at the Ricoh where I think we have won five out of six now so we have got to look to build on that and improve it."
“Peterborough have had a change of manager recently and are fighting relegation so they are going to be up for it, so that will be a difficult place to go but hopefully we can go down there and get three points as well.”
