The phrase 'work in progress' is fast becoming Aidy Boothroyd's catch phrase, although sometimes he uses a variation which essentially means the same thing.
Yesterday Boothroyd admitted he is 'impatient and greedy and I want things to happen yesterday', but he also believes that he has a strong squad.
He is expected to sign controversial striker Marlon King within the next few days and he is also very hopeful of signing young Botlon striker Danny Ward on loan as well. The addition of both players, Boothroyd hopes, will give Coventry City a much needed boost to their goal scoring ability.
The next week or so will also see some of the fringe players going out on loan as the squad is now quite large and some of the players will be in with little chance of getting regular first team football.
Boothroyd is keen for his fringe players to play regular football and the loan market is seen as the way to achieve this. At the same time he doesn't want players moping around the training ground affecting morale.
"I've been in the job three months now and really only worked with the players for the last seven or eight weeks but I have had a good look at things to see where we are strong and where we need to improve," said Boothroyd to the CT.
"I do believe we have a very strong squad as it is and we are getting there, but we are not where I want us to be just yet. I am impatient and greedy and I want things to happen yesterday, so that's something in my character and I can be my own worst enemy sometimes."
When Boothroyd arrived at The Ricoh, he made it clear that he favours building from the back and attacking down the flanks, using wingers and over lapping full backs. He is happy now with the wide players he has and with their ability, but he still thinks that he needs a little more in front of the goal to take advantage of these wide players.
The addition to the squad of King and Ward, Boothroyd believes, will add the missing spark.
"We have got some talented lads in David Bell, Carl Baker and Gary McSheffrey but I know that with more competition they will become even stronger," he explained, "Sometimes you can bring in a player and he gets everyone going. The team used to pick itself but it doesn't any more."
"We have used a lot of players so far and I do want a settled team but complacency can be your biggest downfall if you are not careful."
