After scoring the winning goal at Coventry on Tuesday night, former City striker Jay Bothroyd Tweeted that he disliked Coventry City and their fans, but when The Coventry Telegraph spoke to the Cardiff striker, he backtracked on his claims.
During the game Bothroyd suffered from a foot injury and his Tweets centred around the physical approach of Coventry and their direct style of football.
Speaking to the CT, Boothroyd said, "Even though I believe Coventry are a bit direct I truly believe Mr Boothroyd is a great manager and he will bring back good times there!"
Bothroyd was 18 years old when he joined Coventry City in 2000 from Arsenal. He had a reputation even then as an impetuous player lacking discipline and with questionable motivation.
He has returned to play against his old side a few times and each time has been roundly booed by City fans because of his perceived laziness or lack of motivation on the field when he was a Coventry player.
He played 72 times for The Sky Blues and scored 14 goals. He was not a first choice striker until financial problems forced the club to sell or release some of their better or older players.
Bothroyd claims he left Coventry in 2003 to move to Italian side Perugia because of the same financial woes and had to leave the club as an economy measure.
He claimed in another Tweet, "I got pushed out the club because of the club's finances. While Gordon Strachan was there I was happy. After that I think it was four different managers in two years. Who wants to work in that kind of environment? Who can?"
Bothroyd, along with team mate and fellow ex Coventry City player Craig Bellamy, endured an evening of jeering and boos from the City supporters and on the bus back to Cardiff Tweeted, "I f***ing hate playing Coventry. They should put up rugby posts."
Later on he Tweeted again, "Can't sleep, foot throbbing. Had to get my foot glued together at half time. Deep cut!! Cov tried to bully us."
Cardiff manager, yet another former Coventry City player, Dave Jones confirmed that Bothroyd had a foot injury saying, "Jay had blood pouring through his boot. We just injected it with something, patted him on the head and kicked him back out."
