Cambridge United have received an apology from the referee's assessor following the 3-1 defeat to Coventry City on Tuesday night.

The referee missed a shove in the build up to Jordan Shipley's goal and a penalty in the 55th minute and Cambridge boss Shaun Derry told Cambridge News: “The fact we got an apology off the referee assessor on Wednesday morning highlights some of those decisions that went against us.

“Some blatant decisions that we felt aggrieved of on the night and even more so the following morning. When you get that phone call from Dave Allison [the referee assessor] that comes in apologising for what was some pretty poor decisions on Tuesday against us.

“We know it’s no use now but at the same time I'm respectful of everyone’s role with football. I said this after the game, even after the heartache of losing that game afterwards, I am a very respectful guy realise how difficult it is for the referees.

“There was three clear-cut peanlties. The one at the end was probably the worst, with Harrison Dunk winning his header at the far post and young Tom Bayliss kicking him right from underneath the referee’s nose.

“To get and miss one penalty incident, you find yourself a little bit aggrieved but three, that’s crazy. That’s crazy. And the goal – when there was a double-handed push on Brad Halliday at the back-post, it’s a tough pill to swallow but we’ve had to swallow it.

“Things go against you sometimes, they go against us and you’ve just got to crack on again and get on with it.”
