Coventry City will receive around £2m for playing in the Championship this season. This increase of close to 50% comes after the Premier League made a payment of £100m to the Football League.
Cash Boost For City
The new Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe MP commented: "The Football League is one of the most watched and competitive of any in the world and the foundation on which the success of the Premier League depends. "So it is right that some of the financial rewards from the Premier League's success are re-invested. I welcome this re-distribution and in particular the new funding for community and youth-player development."
How City will spend this extra revenue is open to debate. The Sky Blues have a bank payment due on August 31st and this money would mean that no players would have to be sold to keep the club afloat as Gary McSheffrey was last season. Or some could be available for players or some for the development of the Academy.
