Coventry City have launched an internal inquiry after Chris Stokes tweeted using words that can be deemed as homophobic.
The tweet was quickly removed and Stokes issued an immediate apology for any offence the tweet may have caused.and via the club has issued a further apology saying: "I'd like to apologise for any offence I've caused.
"It was a brainless moment from me and I'm really disappointed in myself for using that term, I'm not homophobic at all. However, I know it is not acceptable by any means and I'm really sorry to any of our supporters or anyone in the wider public who have been offended by the remark."
City have said: "The club would like to stress the offensive remark was completely unacceptable and won't happen again in the future."
Stokes is not the first City player to be in trouble for tweeting. Gary Deegan was dismissed from the club's employment for a tweet which had sectarian overtones.
