City's Chairman Ray Ranson has already spoken to Best's agent and told the CT: "Our new coach Steve Harrison came to watch the lads a few times last season and he picked out Leon Best as one of our players who he believes has great potential.
"When Steve joined Chris's backroom staff recently he reiterated the fact that he was looking forward to working with Leon, among others players at the club.
"Steve was a big influence on Luther Blissett's career, which is not a bad yardstick to go by, so hopefully he will help bring the best out of him because we have seen that he can be a real handful when he's on top of his game.
"We have seen in recent weeks with his international duty that he is enjoying his football at the minute and long may that continue.
"We turned down a serious offer from Nottingham Forest within weeks of my taking over the club back in January 2008, so that was a statement of intent from us then that we felt he was a player with great potential.
Leon Best
"We have had bits of interest in him since then from various clubs but we firmly believe he is one for the future and can build and develop his career here with us.
"He has got 12 months left on his current contract and we will hopefully sit down with Leon and his agent very soon and thrash out a new deal.
"I had already spoken to his agent at the end of the season and hopefully we will get the time to sit down in the coming weeks."
