Coventry City Ladies won their third WPL game this season with a 3-1 home win over Sunderland.
For this WPL game against Sunderland at Bedworth United FC, Paul Cudby was without the injured midfielders McKenna, Barber, Goulding and Saulter.
Kicking into a stiff win, the Sky Blues found it tough going early on. A cross floated onto the top of Sue Wood's crossbar before Sweetman-Kirk flicked on Gauntlett's chip, only for handball to be given against Durrant as she tried to control it.
Jade Formaston was fouled on the right touchline and Simpkins cross met by Gauntlett with a powerful header which well saved by Alderson. However, in the 27th minute, Sunderland took the lead when Beth Mead skipped herway past a challenge and showed some good pace to slot past Sue Wood.
City came back with two efforts from Maz Gauntlett going close before they were level when Sweetman-Kirk chipped over Alderson into top corner of the net after Gauntlett's exquisite flick through.
Formaston and SweetmanKirk combined on the edge of the box with a neat 1-2 for Formaston to send a left footed shot past post. The chances for City kept coming with Gauntlett finding Sweetman-Kirk who flashed a shot past Alderson but back off inside of the post and just avoiding Formaston who was unable to get a foot to it.
It was all square at the break but there was a half chance for the Sky Blues at start of the second half when Gauntlett found Sweetman-Kirk for a shot which was saved and the rebound just evaded Helen Dermody.
Then City hit Sunderland with two quick goals. Maz Gauntlett volleyed into the top left corner from 25 yards and then she did the same to put City 3-1 up.
Beth Mead created two chances for the visitors before the Sky Blues were denied a blatant penalty when Gauntlett was through on goal and had her legs taken as she was lining up a shot as City Ladies wrapped up another good victory.
