City Ladies Boss Jubliant After Win

Last updated : 20 October 2014 By Matty Roper

Coventry City Ladies manager Craig Nicholls was jubilant after his side's 2-0 win over Wolves at Stratford.

Craig Nicholls said to Matty Roper: "it was a good performance all round today, first half was particularly pleasing as we dominated and created a bucket load of chances. We were patient and relaxed in our build up and we looked very confident and content with keeping possession."
"During the second half we slowed down a bit but it can be hard to motivate yourself when you are dominating in the manner we were. Another three points on the board though so let's keep going."

Captain, Natasha Lynch, also said: "it was positive performance by all and we created chance after chance, the only thing we lacked is a clinical nature, but the fact we are creating is very positive. Another clean sheet is an achievement and it's nice to have another win under our belts."

Coventry City LFC welcomed Wolverhampton Wanderers WFC to a windy DCS stadium, the Sky Blues looking to go ten games unbeaten in all competitions. Coventry won the reverse fixture 4-1 and were looking to do the double over their midland rivals.

The Sky Blues started brightly, pressurising Wolves and not allowing the away side to settle on the ball. This pressing style gave City their first chance of the game, with a Katie Lowder cross causing havoc as Natalie Hall made a save, Maz Gauntlett then fired the rebound towards goal on the volley forcing another smart stop from the visiting goalkeeper.

Despite Wolves' best efforts, the Sky Blues continued to carve open the away defence and create chances at will, Destiney Toussaint was denied by another good Hall save before another great chance arrived on 21 minutes. A long ball by Natasha Lynch split the back line and Katie Lowder broke clear before the 'Keeper turned the ball behind. The resulting corner from Maz Gauntlett picked out Ashleigh Neville on the edge of the area, her first-time volley falling agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

Coventry began to really dominate and control possession now, with Wolves definitely on the back foot. Another sublime passing move allowed Gauntlett to go close on 29 minutes before the scoring was finally opened on 33 minutes. Another long ball by Natasha Lynch held up in the wind for Maz Gauntlett to control exquisitely before forcing a save from the goalkeeper, the loose ball fell in to the path of Katie Lowder however and the striker made no error and slotted home to make it 1-0.

The home side's relentless attacking continued for the remaining 12 minutes of the half, Sam Quayle and Natasha Lynch having chances before Ashleigh Neville hit the crossbar with what looked like a cross. Wolves did have one chance of their own before the break, but a great set piece delivery from Jenni Anslow wasn't converted. 1-0 at the interval.

City's domination continued in the second half, and another bright start allowed the lead to be doubled on 49 minutes. Great work from Samantha Quayle down the right wing allowed her to beat an opposing player, cut inside and roll the ball in to Maz Gauntlett, she then dispatched the chance with real quality to widen the gap to 2-0.

Chances were flowing now as City gained a real impetus on the match, confidence was now high and this was shown within spells of brilliant passing moves that questioned the away defence. Maz Gauntlett, Jade Formaston and substitute Amber Hughes all came close before the next big chance came around. A superb ball from Samantha Quayle released Destiney Toussaint one on one with the goalkeeper, Toussaint's effort trickling just wide of the post.

Samantha Quayle was unlucky to not make it 3 on 78 minutes as her effort was narrowly off the mark. The chance came after City recycled possession, Quayle receiving the ball in a pocket of space on the edge of the area. The winger then cut inside and unleashed a rasping effort from 18 yards which smashed off the face of the crossbar.

Coventry created more chances in the final few minutes but were unable to make any of them count, the full-time whistle blowing shortly after to end the game at 2-0 in favour of the home side and send The Sky Blues to the top of the table.
