Coventry City Ladies won their first ever WPL home match with a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic.

At Hinckley United FC, City had to make two goal-line clearances straight from the kick off but were back on the attack, when Maz Gauntlett got through on goal and fizzed a shot inches wide of Lynch's right hand post, Simpkins hook towards goal was saved by Lynch and Dermody's cross in, Leanne McKenna head down and nodded home by Gauntlett which was ruled out for offside all in the opening ten minutes.

In the 15th minute, City made their pressure pay when they took the lead thanks to Maz Gauntlett scoring from close range.

City went looking for a second. McKenna headed wide against a Charlton side which included a number of players who played for Millwall against the Sky Blues in a league cup tie last season and Kayleigh Steele sent a dipping cross just skimming top of crossbar before Helen Dermody fired just over from Lynch's goal kick.

The visitors responded with a 35 yard cross which drifted in the wind and hit the crossbar.

Charlton forced three quick corners at the start of the second half.

Gauntlett drove wide before after outpacing a defender before she was replaced by Hinton.

Charlton had a çorner which eluded everyone, Dickson fires back in from narrow angle whistles just wide.

Sweetman-Kirk in acres of space from substitute Jade Formaston's crossfield ball hit a great strike to force a good save from Lynch as City won 1-0.

City team: Wood, Steele, Ward, McKenna, Lynch, Manley, Simpkins, Gauntlett (Hinton), Sweetman-Kirk, Goulding (Barber), Dermody (Formaston). Subs Wilcox, Bartlett.
