De La Cruz.comes from Ecuador and was released by Reading at the end of last season after making 25 appearances in two seasons, following a £1.5m move from Aston Villa.
Capped by Ecuador on 84 occasions, the 34 year old defender is expected to have a week's trial at City and if he impresses be signed before the Preston game.
