Bottom side Hartlepool got their first point under John Hughes with a 1-1 draw at Walsall but they are eight points behind Scunthorpe who lost their local derby at third placed Doncaster Rovers 4-0, nine behind Shrewsbury beaten 1-0 at Oldham and ten behind Bury who drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth.
Tranmere, who drew 1-1 at Stevenage, still lead the table ahead of MK Dons who beat Colchester United 5-1.
Sheffield United are fourth after a 2-0 defeat at Brentford who have moved up to fifth and Notts County are sixth after a 1-0 win over Swindon.
Elsewhere, Crewe beat Crawley 2-0 and Carlisle won 3-1 at Yeovil.
