City, deservedly beaten 2-1 at Brentford, stay in the same position as Saturday as Scunthorpe lost 3-2 at home to Preston North End. They remain two points behind fifth from bottom Shrewsbury Town who lost 3-1 at home to Yeovil.
Hartlepool United are now bottom after being beaten 2-1 at Bury who have gone above them.
At the top, Tranmere, who are 19 points above City, were beaten at home 2-1 by sixth placed Doncaster Rovers. Ronnie Moore's side lead the table by a point from Stevenage who beat Portsmouth 2-1.
Sheffield United are third after beating Walsall 1-0 at home, with Crawley who beat MK Dons 2-0 in fourth. Notts County are fifth after a 3-3 home draw with AFC Bournemouth,
Elsewhere, Carlisle beat Oldham 3-1, Crewe beat Swindon 2-1 and Leyton Orient whom City travel to on Saturday were beaten 0-2 at home by Colchester United.
