The victory took City above Derby County who lost 4-1 at Cardiff for whom Jay Bothroyd scored and Middlesbrough who drew 3-3 with Leicester City.
The win also put City three points clear of Crystal Palace who beat Barnsley 2-1 at Selhurst Park,
Norwich, who beat Scunthorpe 6-0 at Carrow Road are four points clear of third place Cardiff and Swansea who lost 2-1. at Preston,
Leeds are up to fifth after beating ten man Nottingham Forest 4-1 and Reading are up to sixth after a 2-0 home win against Portsmouth.
Millwall moved up to eighth with a 1-0 win at Hull City. Elsewhere, Bristol City beat Doncaster 1-0.
