The midfielder, who scored twice against Southampton on Saturday, is out of contract at the end of the season and can speak to clubs from January 1st.
"Obviously we want Tabby to sign a new contract and I think Jay wants to sign as well and we have just got to make sure we get a figure sorted out, that's all," said Chris Coleman to the CT.
"I would imagine there will be to-ing and fro-ing. "The chairman wants to speak with Jay face to face across the table and of course we want to get it done.
"We sat down with him in Scotland in the pre-season and told him we wanted to give him a new contract, so that's not going to change.
"He's up at the end of the season and in a lot of ways he could be in the driving seat. "He's a good player and a good honest boy and I am hoping we can come to some sort of agreement between the club and Jay, but the chairman has already spoken about sitting down with Jay, which is good, to get him tied up.
"Jay's attitude is also superb and he is very much someone I would like to keep at the club."
