City's Day of Reckoning

Last updated : 02 May 2008 By Covsupport News Service
Coventry City end their season with a trip to Charlton Athletic.

Normally, by now in the season, the staying up party has become a distant memory and City supporters can't wait for the season to be over and the new one to begin.

However, this time round, the Sky Blues have been pegged back when leading and not made the most of their chances and now lie in 19th place, only two points clear of third from bottom Southampton.

A win mean City will be safe whilst a draw would also be enough for safety even if Southampton who have an inferior goal difference beat Sheffield United.

The bookies have City as 25-1 to be relegated and a defeat at Charlton providing Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester or Southampton lose, woud still be enough.

Covenry go in to the game as masters of the great escape. Last day survival has been achieved on ten previous occasions (the last being that epic day at Tottenham in 1997) but won't be relying on results elsewhere.

They were stung by this in May 2001 when Derby County were allowed to win at Manchester United meaning the Sky Blues were relegated from the Premier League.

Hold on to your hats as the Sky Blue rollercoaster of a highly turbulent season comes to a thrilling conclusion.

Other Championship Matches

Blackpool v Watford
Both sides need to win. Blackpool like City, are only two points clear whilst Watford must win to secure the play off spot that manager Ady Boothroyd has demanded.

Bristol City v Preston
All to play for Gary Johnson's side who can't catch the top three but still need a good finish for a home tie first in the play-off semi-finals.

Cardiff v Barnsley
Nothing to play for here. Although Barnsley will be looking for revenge against the Welshmen who knocked them out of the FA Cup Semi-Finals.

Crystal Palace v Burnley
Neil Warnock's side need a win at Selhurst Park to confirm their play-off spot.

Ipswich v Hull
A mega game here. Ipswich could still make the play-offs if results went their way whilst a win for Hull could send them up automatically.

QPR V WBA
West Brom will want to win this to go up as champions.

Scunthorpe v Colchester
Both sides have long since been relegated and have nothing to play for.

Sheff Wednesday v Norwich
Wednesday need to win against a Norwich side who achieved safety last weekend.

Southampton v Sheffield United
This is a real battle. Southampton must win to have any hope of avoiding the drop whilst United could still make the play-offs if they were to win and other sides were to lose. However, if results were not going their way, then a defeat could possibly relegate their cross town rivals.

Stoke v Leicester
A Stoke win please. Victory for the Potters could make them Champions although a draw would be enough for automatic promotion.  Leicester must win and hope that either Southampton, Sheff Wed, City or Blackpool lose.

Wolves v Plymouth
Wolves can still make the play-offs so the Molineux men will need to win.
