It is understood that Coventry City and Ipswich Town have agreed terms to transfer striker Jon Stead to City. It is now up to the 26 year old front man to decide if he wants to move from Suffolk to the Midlands.
Stead spoke with City manager Chris Coleman last night about the move, initially a loan spell for the remainder of the season, with a view to making the move permanent in the summer.
Stead has bagged six goals this season in 24 games. If he agrees to the move he will be eligible to play against QPR on Saturday, ironically, he came on a substitute for Town against QPR on Tuesday, so he could be playing them twice for two different clubs within four days.
Coleman said to the CT, "We've been working hard to get a striker in before Saturday but we are still working away hard to get one more in before the weekend. Everything is agreed with the club and it is just getting him to sign, so I don't want to tempt fate but we are very optimistic."
Our aim is to keep improving the squad. Things cannot always happen as quickly as we would like them to happen but we believe we have shown over the past few weeks that we are committed to our plan of improving the squad whenever the opportunity comes along."
Jon Stead is 26 years old, and 6'3". While on loan at Derby County from Sunderland, he scored his first goal for the Rams in their 2-1 win over Coventry in November 2006. He has found the net 18 times in 61 appearances for Ipswich. His previous clubs include Blackburn, Sunderland, Huddersfield, Sheffield United as well as Ipswich.
Stead has played for England under 21 eleven times and managed one international goal
