Coventry Copsewood are through to the Coventry Charity Football Cup Semi-Finals after a 3-0 victory over Woodlands WMC at Allard Way.
Copseswood took the lead in the fourth minute thanks to a free kick not being dealt with by the Woodlands keeper and Martin Gormley being on hand to bundle the ball into the net from close range.
Coventry Alliance side Woodlands went close seven minutes later when their corner was cleared off the line but against a side three divisions above them, they started to lose their discipline and had four players cautioned before the break in what was a fiery first half.
There was less than a minute gone in the second half when Woodlands were awarded a penalty when their striker was sent crashing.
This spot kick was crashed onto Scott Furlong's crossbar and proved to be costly as Copsewood went two goals up in the 49th minute. Martin Gormley broke and got past Woodlands replacement keeper who had come on at half-time due to their original custodian suffering dizziness following a first half collision. The goal was now open and Gormley made sure by slotting the ball into the net.
In the 62nd minute, things turned ugly when there was a stamp by a Copsewood defender and his victim, who had already been cautioned retaliated.
Woodlands were further reduced with their number being sent off for an elbow on PJ Gordon in the 74th minute and their number ten sent off for dissent, an offence, he was cautioned for in the first half. in the 81st minute.
Eight men down, Woodlands survived Gormley missing three good chances before Copsewood booked their place in the Semi-Finals of the competition which has its final at the Ricoh Arena on April 23rd with Ward going down the left and unselfishly cutting back for Martin Gormley to complete his hat-trick and give Coventry Copsewood a 3-0 win.
