City are now six points clear of third from bottom Scunthorpe United who beat Swansea City 1-0, five points clear of Crystal Palace who lost 1-0 at Burnley and three points clear of Middlesbrough who lost 5-2 at Reading.
Sheffield United are still without a win under Micky Adams after losing 1-0 at Portsmouth and are second bottom whilst bottom side Preston drew 1-1 at fourth placed Norwich.
At the top of the table, QPR beat Leicester 1-0 at Loftus Road and are eight points ahead of second placed Swansea.
Cardiff City gave a debut to former Sky Blue Stephen Bywater but it was the other former City loanee keeper at the other end who had the last laugh as two corkers from Jimmy Bullard gave Ipswich a 2-0 win at the Cardiff City stadium.
Fifth placed Nottingham Forest lost their first home match in 36 games when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Hull City whilst Leeds stay in sixth after beating Doncaster whom Coventry travel to on Tuesday night, 5-2 at Elland Road.
Elsewhere, Watford are up to 12th with a 1-0 win over Millwall and Derby stay in 18th following a 0-0 draw with Barnsley.
City old boy Leon Best scored for Newcastle in a 2-1 home defeat to Everton, Andy Whing scored for Leyton Orient with a 79th minute diving header in a 2-0 win over Notts County and Andy Morrell scored for Wrexham in a 2-0 win over Forest Green.
