The life of Cyrille Regis was remembered this afternoon with a memorial service at Coventry Cathedral.
The former Coventry City striker died in January aged 59 and with a service being held at The Hawthorns on January 30th, there was plenty who felt that there should be one in Coventry as well with the Coventry Observer's Les Reid's amongst the main protaganists.
Hard work from many people ensured it happened and there was plenty including some of Cyrille's former City team mates including Keith Houchen, Steve Ogrizovic, Dave Bennett, Michael Gynn, former City players such as Gary McSheffrey and Carl Baker and other members of the Coventry City Former Players Association, current players such as Michael Doyle and Max Biamou, former club employees, current club employees, Mark Robins, Tim Fisher and David Boddy and representatives of a number of supporters clubs including the Diamond Club, Sky Blue Trust, London, South Wales, Irish supporters clubs.
Cyrille's family were in attendance as were members of the churches he attended and things he was involved with and they heard a very moving speeches by Brendan Batson and Greg Downs.
Religion in Cyrille's later years was a big part of his life and there was prayers and hymns from the Dean Of Coventry, the very Reverend John Witcombe and Mark Beswick before an interview with some of Cyrille's family.
Lord Mayor of Coventry Tony Skipper made a reading before the Archbishop of York John Sentamu spoke at length.
This 90 minute moving service ended with choruses of the Sky Blue Song and chants of "Cyrille", "There's Only One Cyrille Regis" and fittingly "Nice One Cyrille" with Neville and Christine Staple performing "A Message To You Rudy"
