The Coventry City Former Player Association's ‘special guest’ for the Sky Blue’s opening home fixture of the season will be Association committee man and CCFC star of the 1980s Dave Bennett.
‘Benno’ will be at the Ricoh, as usual, to see the latest squad of Mogga’s Men kick off the club’s season in front of the Sky Blue Army at the Ricoh next Tuesday night against League Two Portsmouth (9th August 2016 ko 7.45pm). Pompey, of course, are managed by former Sky Blue midfielder (and CCFPA member) Paul Cook and Mogga’s men could well come up against former CCFC colleagues Adam Barton and Association members Michael Doyle and Carl Baker!!
Yesterday, the Sky Blues will have fought for their first League One points at Swindon Town (the club where ‘Benno’ finished his professional career in 1992). However, ‘Benno’ will be interested to see whether Tony Mowbray sticks to the same players to take on Pompey in Round 1 of the EFL Cup or rotates his squad of largely young players. Either way we could see home debuts for summer signings Kyel Reid and Marvin Sordell.
One of our 1987 Sky Blue F.A.Cup winners, Dave is a regular at the Sky Blues home games at the Ricoh. As a nominated true ‘CCFC Legend’ Dave will be hoping to bring some inspiration to the Sky Blues squad to get their ‘Fortress Ricoh’ mentality up and running for 2016-17
From 1983-89 ‘Benno’ scored 25 league goals in 172 league appearances for the Sky Blues before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday. Needing little introduction to CCFC fans he is no stranger to media work and once more will join BBC CWR’s live match commentary team during the game.
Not only a long standing CCFPA committee member, Dave has done much to support the work of various Legends’ charitable games over the years as well as other charity events.
Look out for Dave on Tuesday night around the Ricoh Lounges before the main event and, no doubt, immediately after the game Benno and CCFPA’s Billy Bell will reprise a well-worn but very entertaining double act on the stage of Lady G’s in the Ricoh’s G-Casino.
