Making his long awaited return to football, Coventry City's feisty midfielder Gary Deegan had a mixed evening at Leamington last night.
The 23 year old Deegan started the game and was doing well and looked sharp until late on in the first half when he pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury.
He had to leave the field of play in the 43rd minute and it later transpired he has a thigh strain, which is not as bad as was first feared, but it is likely that he will now miss the start of the new season.
There was better news though with the return to action of striker Clive Platt who appeared to have recovered from the knee injury he picked up while training in Portugal.
Platt was replaced during the game but not through injury. He was understandably a bit short of form and fitness after a long lay off, but he did provide a bit of magic in providing Callum Wilson with the pass that led to his goal.
McPake played the full 90 minutes, the first time he has managed such a feat since he broke a bone in his back last year. He even tried a spectacular overhead kick along with some hard tackling, but he did give away the penalty that Berwick scored for Leamington.
