Below is the Football League's response as to why they scheduled Coventry City's match against Walsall FC on the same night at England play Denmark at Wembley.
"In reference to the Coventry versus Walsall fixture, this situation was not ideal but The League essentially had to go with the best of a number of difficult options.
A number of options were discussed with the clubs concerned and eventually The League had to take a decision based on all factors. FL regulation 26.2 provides that The League Executive has absolute discretion in relation to a dispute between clubs in respect of the rearrangement of any fixtures (http://www.football-league.co.uk/regulations/20130704/section-5-fixtures_2293633_2125729#26).
It is worth reiterating that all fixtures are subject to change whether this is for broadcast, competition clashes/progression, weather, or local authority/police requests, however it is of course regrettable if you have encountered any difficulties due to fixture changes and we do attempt to keep changes to a minimum throughout a season and work with clubs to notify supporters early wherever possible.
The game is scheduled for Wednesday essentially as Coventry are playing on the Sunday and preferred not to play on Sunday then Tuesday. It is the club’s favoured date to play on the Wednesday.
The Football League can schedule games for any point within a week, with the consent of its member clubs. A game will not be selected if it clashes with an international fixture only if either of the sides would be adversely affected by way of players withdrawing to play at international level.
In this situation neither Coventry or Walsall are adversely affected by England playing Denmark.
