Much has been made of the apathy of some Coventry City supporters regarding the annual releasing of the fixture list.
With most of the support refusing to go anywhere near Northampton, away games for some Coventry City supporters are now their only way of supporting the Sky Blues in person, whilst for many others, away games are just a conduit for meeting friends and family with the match being just something to do for a couple of hours as part of a day rather than the main reason for being somewhere.
So when the Football League computer decided to give the Sky Blues a Tuesday night trip to Fleetwood Town, a new ground and a chance for a day or a few days by the sea with the bars and nightlife that nearby Blackpool has to offer or a Tuesday night trip to Oakwell, a venue enjoyed by over two thousand City supporters last season in the FA Cup, it was not surprising there was tides of apathy from some of the more vocal Sky Blue support.
Neither Fleetwood, Barnsley or Scunthorpe or Oldham can be happy as the scheduling of these matches for midweek will see their match income from the City support greatly reduced as many who would have gone on a Saturday are unable to make a midweek game due to work, uni, college, school or family arrangements and City can't be happy either knowing that less fans from the four aforementioned clubs will be attending midweek matches at Sixfields for the same reasons.
The Football League AGM of 2013 saw the clubs voting for an extra Saturday rather than a midweek match and extending the season might be just one possible way for the Football League to ensure that supporters can attend the matches they want to go to and their member clubs can maximise their income from bigger travelling supports rather than playing loss making midweek matches and adding to the debts that many clubs already have.
