Former Coventry City keeper John Filan has been named as the Assistant Manager at Shrewsbury Town.
The Australian played sixteen times for City between 1995 and 1997 deputising for Steve Ogrizovic and went on to play 64 times for Blackburn and 184 times for Wigan Athletic.
Filan has been at Blackburn's Academy and working with John Askew, who is now the manager of Shrewsbury, at Macclesfield Town.
Speaking to Shrewsbury's clun website, John Filan said about his appointment: “It’s a great opportunity for myself and I’m very thankful to the manager for his belief to bring me in and also the Football Club for welcoming me.
“The first day has been looking at the main ground and getting a feel for the place. When you walk in the door it’s got the feel of somewhere that is done right.
“I’ve only been in the place an hour and a half and so far my enthusiasm for it is warranted. It’s a big step (For me) and it’s something I have always focused on since finishing playing.
“Because of my playing career people think goalkeeping coach, I’ve never really been interested in the goalkeeping coaching side of it.
“When I have done something for 35 years, something else was interesting me.
“We’re very fortunate that we have Danny here as goalkeeping coach, he’s an experienced player and coach which is great but the outfield side of it really interests me.
“Now this opportunity to work with John and the Football Club is the next step and I’m keen to get going.
“I’ve known John for three years now. He’s a proper football person, I’ve been offered jobs to work with different people but for me the people at a work place are more important.
“I wouldn’t be sitting here now if I didn’t believe in him. That’s the type of character I want to work for and I’m sure he will do a great job.”
