Former Coventry City loanee defender Leon Barnett has joined Northampton Town.

Barnett, who played for City on loan from West Brom in 2009/2010,  making twenty appearances, had been at Bury.

However, his contract has been terminated and he joins Northampton on a two year deal with Justin Edinburgh saying to his club's website: "Leon is a dominant, leader type centre-half who puts his body on the line.

"He has played a lot of his football in the top two tiers with a fair amount of success and he has a lot of quality.

"Leon has three promotions from the Championship to the Premier League on his CV and we believe the qualities he has will be a big help to the squad."

Meanwhile, former City midfielder Paul Cook has as expected been appointed the new manager of Wigan Athletic.

Cook has signed a three year deal after compensation with Portsmouth was agreed.
