Coventry Sphinx Manager Luke Hopkins has said that getting a result was his side’s main priority as they overcame Gornal Athletic 3-2 at Sphinx Drive.
Hopkins said: “We got the result that's the main priority.
“With the midweek game against Highgate called off, it gave us a chance to have a rest and we had the full week off after what has been a hard five or six weeks and going forward another hard four weeks with midweek games to finish the season as strong as possible.
“We looked at the league table prior to the game and you shouldn’t really dwell on previous results but I feel we had dropped ten to twelve points on poor performance to teams we should and that's not disrespecting anyone as this is a tough competitive league I think. But if you add those points on to our current total, we are third and not far from competing for the league.
“We started poorly Saturday, Gornal weren't in the game it was just bad decisions from us.
“Finally after ten minutes, we got into gear and applied some pressure, both Gio Dainty and Jackson Downie acting as massive threats and it was from a ball in to the box that we won a penalty which Luke Williams slotted home with a good finish.
“We then stopped and it wasn't long before Gornal equalised. This made us start again and apply more pressure looking for another goal and it came with a great finish from a free kick, twenty five yards out, which Luke Williams bent into the net.
“In the second half, we came out and started well, looking for a third which came early through a corner into the box and Ricky fletcher celebrated first for what was our 500th MFA goal.
“We made some changes early doors to use the squad and try to keep as many fresh for Tuesday game at Highgate and the run in ahead.
“We were on top but the fourth goal didn't come and Gornal had their ten minute spell in the game as all teams do and it was in the last ten where we gave them a soft goal and shows how important it is that we can score more.
“We got the points but it wasn't great.
“Whether it's nothing other than pride and highest league position to play for, the lads have a challenge to finish off so the season and hopefully we can finish as close to if not on eighty points.”
