The Football League's Shaun Harvey has said that he is not supporting the view that the EFL Trophy should be exclusively for League One and Two clubs.
There was plenty of opposition to having U21 sides in the competition but it could be argued that by having weaker teams in the competition helped City to win the EFL Trophy at Wembley on April 2nd.
Speaking to the Guardian about the competition, Harvey said:
“Having listened to all the arguments we got to this position where two thirds of the clubs were happy to support [the new format].
“There were lots of different views on different boards, it really did divide opinion, because the clubs’ most important asset are the fans who turn up every week.
“There will always be some supporters who believe that the competition should be only for League One and League Two clubs. It’s a valid opinion and they are entitled to hold it but it’s not one we’re supporting at this moment in time.”
