Sphinx Sports & Social beat Woodlands Reserves 2-1 in a Coventry Alliance Division 2 game this afternoon at Sphinx Drive.

The visitors had the ball in the net after only 43 seconds but that was ruled out by referee Paul Salisbury.

Sphinx pressed with a stunning drive from Junior Williams being pushed over by the finger tips of the keeper before Sphinx took the lead in the ninth minute when Nicky Martin got clear to finish with aplomb.

Williams hit the bar before in the 42nd minute, the visitors who had come back into the game, levelled when a break was not dealt with.

The second half belonged to Sphinx against a Woodlands side who had to put an injured player in goal.

Williams, before he was replaced in the 63rd minute by Tom Cudworth, was at the heart of many of the Sphinx raids on goal.

It was Cudworth who was involved in Sphinx second goal in the 70th minute with a long ball into the area which beat the stand in keeper and was helped into the net by Ash Pringle on the line.

Martin, Fisher, Stevenson, Pringle, Bowen and Cudworth all had chances to add to the margin of victory but a 2-1 win was good enough for Shaun Sweeney and Tom Cudworth's side.
