Coventry City left back has been working hard to secure a regular place in the team and he is not content with a place on the bench with occasional substitute appearances either.
The 21 year old Hussey opted to join the Sky Blues from non league AFC Wimbledon last October even though there were several other suitors chasing his signature.
Hussey has only had a handful of substitute appearances since his arrival and now want to push for more regular first team football and he has been working hard to prove to his manager Chris Coleman that he is ready.
The left back has been putting in double shifts at the Ryton training ground in a bid to prove his fitness, his ability and his willingness to work hard for the team.
Hussey was one of three half time substitutes replacing long time City servant Marcus Hall at left back at The Ricoh on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday. His 45 minute shift came after he had a run out at The Hawthorns the previous week.
Hussey said, “I thought I did quite well when I went on and I was quite pleased to get a decent run-out because I have been patient and had to bide my time. I got 15 to 20 minutes at West Brom so I am enjoying it at the moment. I have been doing well in training so hopefully I can continue to progress and get more games before the end of the season.
“I have been doing a lot of extra sessions on defending because I am good going forward but need to work on my defending which will hopefully come with games.
Chris Coleman signed the defender as raw talent but has seen him develop well. His extra time on the training ground and working with with the coaching staff has been time well spent.
“People might forget I have come up from the Conference so every game I get I will hopefully get better.” said Hussey
Boss Chris Coleman said: “Offensively he is ready. When he arrived and we watched him he was very good going forward and has a lovely left foot."
“Playing in the Conference you can get away with a lot more than at our level and to be fair to him he has not jumped one league, he has jumped three, so it is not easy and he needs his defending more now at the back stick and one v one."
“Steve Harrison has worked hard with him and he is going to get better and I can certainly see him figuring for us between now and the end of the season, so he has improved.”
Coleman explained that Hussey has the ability to get forward and put in good crosses and to make himself available on the overlap. He showed much of this ability in his two recent substitute appearances.
Speaking about his second half performance against The Owls, Hussey explained, “The manager just told me to get forward as much as I can and I thought I did that and managed to get a few crosses in and hopefully I can continue that,”
“I have noticed the difference in quality but I felt quite comfortable on Saturday and I am quite confident and really enjoyed it. I tried to put in a few crosses and they are usually better than that to be fair, but hopefully that will improve."
"We have got six or seven games left and hopefully I can do enough to get a run in the team. If not then I will keep working hard and try to push on next season. I want to come back in the pre-season and try to stamp my mark and get the shirt."
"Everyone wants to play and every day I try to learn off Marcus Hall. Martin Cranie has been playing there recently but I want to come back in the summer and be in the team. I have settled in now and am not overawed by anything and have got confidence in my ability.”
Coleman agreed and wants to see Hussey mature during the sumer break, saying, “I would like to see him come back for pre-season and want that shirt. Sometimes you see players come back as men and it changes just like that and it could happen with him.
“He is a left-back, 6ft 1.5", he’s quick with a great left foot so he has got every chance and we have seen improvements, for sure.”
